Part #2: All about Perfectback® Strips

Which strip is which?
There are three types of Perfectback® strips: Temperature Activated (TA), Lay-Flat (LF), and Pressure Sensitive (PS). Each type of strip has its advantages. Which strip you use depends on what you are binding and the final results that you wish to achieve.

Temperature Activated (TA)
The Perfectback® TA strip was created to match traditional perfect binding in every respect. The interior sheets are thermally bound to the Perfectback-TA strip and then the book block is thermally bound to the cover. The TA strip is the best choice for use with covers that are offset printed.

Pressure-Sensitive (PS)
Virtually identical in appearance to the TA strip, the PS strip is a good all-purpose strip, and the best choice when the cover is heat sensitive. The interior sheets are thermally bound, and then the cover is attached using a pressure sensitive adhesive, so the cover does not need heating. The PS strip is the best choice for covers that are printed on inkjet, dye-sub, or toner printers (laser printers).

Lay-Flat (LF)
The best choice for manuals, cookbooks, and any documents that need to remain opened to a page when it is laid down. Like the PS strip the Lay-Flat strip uses a pressure sensitive adhesive rather than thermal glue to bind the book block to the cover.

How to bind Perfectback® strips
The first steps for using the Perfectback strips start the same as any Fastback binding strip. The interior pages are jogged and placed in the Fastback binder. The green button is pushed, and the strip is inserted in the feed slot on the right side of the binder. After the book is bound, it is placed in the cooling rack for four minutes to cool. (With the PS strip, care must be taken as to the direction of the strip. We will discuss this in the instructions for the PS strip.)

From here, what you do next depends on the strip type.

Note: The instructions that follow are slightly different from the instructions that appear in the Scoring Machine manual.

Perfectback®-TA strip

After the bound book block has cooled, peel off the exterior paper backing from the book block.

Insert the book block into the pre-scored and folded cover.

Place the book in the Fastback binder, then press the green button on the Fastback binder and hold it, 'Perfectback' will appear on the display screen and the binding process will begin.

When the book is released, place it in the cooling rack for at least 4 minutes.

Perfectback®-PS Strip

With the Pressure Sensitive strip, care must be taken as to the direction of the strip. If you look at the back of the PS strip you will notice that the release paper backing consists of a wide piece and a narrow piece. The binder will only accept the PS strip with the narrow piece closest to the front of the binder. If you try and insert the strip with the wide piece closest to the front of the binder, the binder will reject it. When binding the book block, make sure that the front to the book is facing you.

After the bound book block has cooled, peel off the narrow release paper from the book block.

Use the guide rail and the scoring die to align the cover and book block.

Note: Pre-folding the cover makes this process easier.

Fold the Front cover down and press along the spine to adhere the cover.
Turn over the book and remove the wide release paper and press the back cover and spine to the adhesive.
Perfectback®-LF strip

On the LF strips, there are two narrow release papers. Unlike the PS strip, the binder does not distinguish between the two release strips on the LF and will bind in either direction.

After the bound book block has cooled, peel off the narrow release paper from the front side of the book block.

Use the guide rail and the scoring die to align the cover and book block. (Note: Pre-folding the cover makes this process easier.

Note: Pre-folding the cover makes this process easier.

Fold the Front cover down and press along the spine to adhere the cover.
Turn over the book and remove the remaining release paper and press the back cover to the adhesive. Note: There is no adhesive on the spine.
After the book is bound, you will usually want to trim the book on three sides to give it smooth edges and an even appearance.

That's all there is to it! Within minutes you can create a publication-quality paperback book. Don't underestimate how much this ability impresses clients. This is especially true when the Perfectback solution is presented in tandem with the Fastback® Hardcover™ products.
